After witnessing the hanging of a prisoner, the jailers laughed and joked because they felt relieved that the process was over. Conversely, during the hanging process, they were anxious and wanted to end the execution as quickly as possible. By including this incident, Orwell demonstrated that capital punishment is not a pleasant experience for all the parties involved.
