By saying that southerners are the only friends of black people, Fitzhugh once again stresses that slavery is the best option for them. Those who want to free them actually do not think about the consequences of this for slaves. Fitzhugh believes that they can only exist under the supervision of white men. Without it, black people will soon find themselves at the bottom of society. In other words, black people need to stay close to southerners because these men know how to use them for good. It seems that Fitzhugh pities black people for being dumb and weak. He does not view them as animals, and thus, his attitude toward them may be called rather weird compassion. Perhaps, only a few slaves would agree with Fitzhugh’s position because they would rather struggle to survive in the free world than be safe in chains.
