A keystone species is a species that is critical in maintaining ecological structure having a superior impact on the environment. Robert notes that a keystone species has an uneven effect on its ecosystem however much small it is. They are important in controlling the type and number of various other species in the ecosystem. It plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem structure. When they are out of the ecosystem the other animals will take over and greatly affect the diversity of other species in the ecosystem.
