The availability of Zn2+ for interaction with the enzymes is typically dependent on the thionein to metallothionein ratio. At higher T/(T+MT), the tissues and cells experience a higher picomolar concentration of free zinc ions. At lower percentages, the nanomolar concentration of zinc ions becomes more available and hinders non-zinc metalloenzymes activities. Thus, MT is a critical element in controlling cellular zinc ion availability, which has been deduced from the match between zinc ion buffering and zinc ion affinity for proteins.
