The Ziggurat is a large fortress with multi-tiered terraces. Lumen Learning asserts that it is a stepped pyramid with a sanctuary on top in its shape. The tradition was to paint different levels in different colors – black, brick, or white. Landscaping of the terraces was also carried out, which further distinguished the building from the general background. The Sumerian Ziggurats are similar to Egyptian pyramids. It is a kind of stairs to heaven, but unlike the famous tombs of the pharaohs, the rise here is piecemeal and level-by-level. The Ziggurat’s vertex was settled with a temple, where the entry was unattainable to a plain visitor. Sometimes clergy came here for astronomic observations. The Ziggurats’ architectural style confirmed the gods’ authority and the significance of a priests’ caste.
