A concrete thinking of children is directly connected to what they have already seen or experienced. At this stage, no assumptions and hypotheses are made. When children imagine people without thumbs, they remember activities where thumbs are used and conclude that those activities will not be possible anymore. Consequently, they presume that it would be impossible to play a thumb game, for instance. A formal explanation of the world without thumbs presupposes a deeper level of real comprehension. An adolescent thinks abstractly, assuming that the world would be different. This thinking includes the observation of the suggested phenomenon, its analysis, and proposing a hypothetic solution.
