Explain the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning as crime scene logic processes.

Investigators should avoid trying to prove a hypothesis and instead use inductive and deductive reasoning techniques to logically recreate a crime scene. In deductive reasoning, the investigator draws conclusions centered on known facts. It thus enables the investigator to reach a definitive conclusion. For instance, skin cells matching the suspect’s DNA profile found under a murder victim’s nails. This suggests that the suspect was with the victim at one point.

However, in inductive reasoning, the investigator draws conclusions based on non-definitive facts. Therefore, this leads to a probative conclusion. For example, when determining the starting point of a house fire.
