Explain Locke’s view that we can have knowledge of an external world despite our being directly aware only of sense data. Do you agree with him, or do you side with his critics who say that we can know only the contents of our minds?

Locke’s argument that despite being directly aware only of sense-data we can have knowledge of the external world is based on the fundamental nature of reality. This knowledge is based on reality as opposed to mere imaginations. For example, we know that the sun exists because that is the reality as opposed to the creations of our minds. We do not imagine that the sun exists for, in reality, it does. I agree with Locke because we cannot be limited to the contents of our minds. Our thoughts are mainly based on our experiences and the fact that we have not experienced a certain occurrence does not mean that it does not exist.
