In his speech, McCarthy makes numerous, largely negative references towards Communist states. At first, he refers to states adopting Communism as lacking morality, as the political ideology denies any presence of religion or philosophy which may provide moral ground while allowing the government to act viciously to maintain control without any restraint. The “religion of immoralism” as McCarthy refers to the Communist ideology as it was adopted historically through the establishment of the Soviet Union seeks to divide the world, establish a police state, and eliminate frameworks of Christian democracy which is valued by Americans.
McCarthy also notes the overwhelmingly larger population of Communist states in comparison to that of the United States and its allies which further emphasized the rapid spread of the communism ideology in the world. The senator believed that these Communist states are not only attempting to influence and propagandize their ideology but invade the country through a network of spies. McCarthy mentions that certain groups and individuals, particularly among the ruling elite and the State Department staff which have been betraying their country from within.
