Neutralization tests are employed in the inactivation of viruses and evaluation of the neutralizing bodies. The test operates under the principle that in the presence of a virus, neutralizing bodies are secreted to inhibit or neutralize its biological effects by forming a virus-antibody complex. The complex minimizes or stops viral infections in several ways: blocking uptake into cells, interference of virion-receptor bonding, facilitating the aggregation of virions, binding to surface cell receptors of antiviral antibodies, or preventing the uncoating of genomes in endosomes. Therefore, when a patient’s serum is mixed with a virus suspension of the same type, the antibodies to the virus present in the serum will conjugate with the virus and prevent neutralize infectivity. To evaluate neutralizing bodies, this is usually compared to a control.
