Pythagoras was another philosopher interested in discovering the nature of the substance. In his opinion, mathematics (more specifically numbers) is the answer to the question. Since numbers cannot be mistaken, understanding them would provide knowledge about the nature of the substance. He is widely known for his studies of geometry (and for the Pythagoras theorem).
