According to Murasaki Shikibu, women are lesser beings than men are, and thus, their ability to attain salvation or a permanent state of enlightenment happens through reincarnation as a male. The view of Murasaki Shikibu is that women as men are trying to salvage their past ungodly lives. Therefore, Murasaki holds the view that women do not have any chances of salvation regardless of their virtues.
