Explain and evaluate Rousseau’s criticism of both Hobbes and Locke regarding the state of nature.

According to Rousseau, both Locke and Hobbes based their views on observations conducted in certain types of societies. Thus, susceptibility to conflict is a result of corrupting influence of governments rather than the natural state. Based on anthropological data, Rousseau concluded that humans are naturally innocent and that reasoning is pertinent to social rather than natural characteristics.
