The author uses rhetoric that is easily comprehensible and accessible. Reading the essay feels like a conversation. The piece is written in a manner that does not necessarily push a specific opinion upon the reader but offers enough input to be credible and potentially influential. Bordo’s argument is structured in a manner that presents a problem with backing evidence and offers a solution. The solution is not concrete, but it clearly identifies the culprit of popular media behind the issue. While media itself is entertaining and does not necessarily define body image, the commercialization of these aspects through products of care, clothing, cosmetics based on brands and trends that in itself is wrong. Bordo uses anaphora as a method to drive forward the importance of her message since repetition is psychologically more likely to be remembered. She uses descriptive, emotional language when talking about real-life examples of self-perception, connecting with the reader on a personal level. Meanwhile, more formal academic language is used to present anthropological findings to support the argument. Comparison is used as a technique to perpetuate the discussion and use it as a supporting point. Obviously, each culture described in the essay is unique, and the exposure to media which causes eating disorders may have varied, but comparison helps to identify common themes which can be addressed if a solution was to be found.
