Examine the importance of peer relationships in learning. Give examples and explain situations in which peer pressure may have positive and/or negative impact on the learning process. Suggest strategies to encourage positive peer pressure and discourage negative peer pressure in a classroom.

Learning is a long and complicated process that is usually undertaken by groups of children. As such, peer relationships inevitably form between students, which can have both positive and negative effects on their education process. As described by Gillies, students can seek and provide information to each other, enabling a better understanding of the topics being discussed. However, peer pressure can also be disadvantageous, as false information and undesirable habits may be spread through the same channels. As such, teacher supervision is essential to maximize the effects of the interactions during the learning process.

An approach that fosters positive peer pressure and prevents negative influences is necessary to maximize teaching efficiency. Gillies suggests a method based on five components: interdependence, promotive interaction, individual accountability, social skills, and process reflection. These values have to be taught to students and expressed during group formation. Furthermore, supervision can help prevent negative peer pressure, as can the promotion of an environment that motivates everyone to excel instead of punishing children that lag behind their peers. It is likely impossible to completely eliminate adverse influences, as children would likely continue to interact beyond learning institutions. Nevertheless, a teacher should do everything within his or her power to ensure that all children perform at the peak of their abilities.
