Evaluate Vrasidas’s paper on constructivism and objectivism and relate it to your teaching approach. Describe the biggest challenges in using a constructivist approach to replace objectivism. Do you whether agree with the author regarding the two paradigms?

Analyzing the Vrasidas paper reveals that both constructivism and objectivism are closely related to the theory of learning and have little regard for teaching. Learning is, however, explicitly linked to teaching constructivism is generally presented as the change in understanding and conduct that arises due to one’s encounter with experiences. This perspective of learning is the same as that of the student-centered instructional method used to deliver information.

On the other hand, objectivism is presented as the opposite of constructivism because it describes the function of an instructor as the expert who devises the instructional techniques used to provide the learners with information and knowledge. The objectivism paradigm supports the teacher-centered methodology and pedagogical delivery style. Practically, the teacher may use both of the approaches based on the subject being taught and the ability of the learner.

My approach to teaching is based on the constructivism paradigm. I believe in the principle of knowledge and knowing as well as an active contribution from the learner and the instructor in knowledge construction rather than a teacher-centered technique that utilizes a teacher-based teaching approach where the teacher is viewed as the transmitter of knowledge and the absolute controller of the learning process and the learning environment.

As Loseke explains, the key challenge of replacing the older Objectivist approach with the constructivist paradigm is the fear of causing social disorder. There is a strong belief that the old social order is held together by a series of shared values in the cultural dimensions and social institutions such as religion and that any attempt to completely eradicate the Objectivist approach may result to complete social disorganization.

The other challenge is that the change might attract a lot of resistance. Adjusting people’s attitudes from the understanding that knowledge is objective and that adequate teaching involves the transfer of information from the instructor to the learner might result in a conceptual conflict and may take too long to be fully integrated into the social system.

According to Gijselaers, the two paradigms can be implemented as required based on the student’s ability and the focus of the study. The traditional Objectivist approach emphasizes teacher-centered learning, which suits learners who need complete teacher control and guidance through the educational process.

The instructor makes vital decisions regarding the learning functions encouraging passive dependence rather than the proactivity required for future performance. The constructivist methodology supports a holistic approach that promotes the use of problem-based instructional mechanisms in which learners gain knowledge and its application simultaneously.
