Downey and Neylan address the phenomenon of “Indian Sports Days”. To what extent has sports been an instrument of colonialism?

“Indian Sports Days”, staged during holiday celebrations, featured soccer, lacrosse, and baseball; others were summoned to fall festivals by organizers to participate in separate all-Native tournaments and add a touch of uniqueness to the festivities. Indigenous peoples, on the other hand, utilized these athletic events and the opportunity they provided to oppose, resist, and even overthrow colonial goals.

Downey records that during the lacrosse, other players gave him names that symbolized their dislike for the colonialists such as the chief little burnt face. Evidently, Sports Days and other holiday festivities, in the eyes of Indian Affairs, were a way to carry and inculcate a range of political objectives that were being pursued in other ways.
