The notion of function in art is inseparable from the perception of art by the audience. Art is only sensible as long as someone embraces and absorbs it – and perceiving art usually involves assigning it some function. Kant argued that “to function in the world to achieve our human purposes, we label much of what we sense,” pieces of art included. Thus, upon absorbing an object of art, a person immediately assigns it some function, whether it is social, political, aesthetical, or any other, simply by virtue of perceiving it. Therefore, art objects do not require a function to be art but, usually, have this function assigned to them nevertheless. This is also why a person can hardly judge whether art objects are valuable in themselves, without a function, as assigning a function is a virtually inevitable outcome of perceiving them.
