The expression theory claims that the primary purpose of art is to communicate emotions to the audience. It has a valid point: after all, a purely intellectual work that does not stir anyone’s feelings belongs to the realm of science or philosophy rather than art. However, one must also be aware that the artist does not need to “have the feeling in question” to create an artwork interpreting it. Filming a movie or painting a portrait may take months, and one can hardly expect an artist to experience the same emotions during this period. Hence, art – whether abstract or not – is not a pure expression of feelings but, rather, a deliberate statement on sentiments expressed through artistic media.
