Edwards suggested that the meaning of any event taking place in life may be perceived only in the present. Thus, there is no difference whether one lives an eternal blissful life or just a short one but an equally blissful life since qualitatively they will be equal. For this reason, Edwards also criticized the idea that one may find a purpose in life at a certain distant point in the future and it would make his/her life meaningful since humans are normally concerned only with the present and the nearest future. In other words, a person either perceives life as meaningful now or his/her life is not meaningful at all, and it does not matter whether that person will live for another eighty years or will die tomorrow.
I agree with Edward’s idea regarding the value of the present experiences. After all, life is merely a sequence of present moments and when one hopes to become happy and find life meaning somewhere in the future, it seems like he or she is not living fully. I also agree that the length of life does not define whether life is meaningful or not. Overall, the quality of experiences is more important than their quantity and duration.
