Negative stereotypes, such as people becoming less intelligent with age, can affect the memory capacities of the elderly. That is due to numerous factors that affect people on a psychological and sociocultural level. First of all, the stereotype threat changes the self-esteem of the adults, and because of that, they avoid activities that need cognitive involvement. They may feel that tasks that need strong cognitive and memory functioning are not for them. That consequently leads to a worsening of the overall memory performance. All of these stereotypes come from society and work against older people. The stereotypes about aging are a serious issue that has a negative effect on memory performance. To avoid the negative consequences of the stereotype threat people should give the elderly more control over their life and support their decisions.
