The two periods in twentieth-century when the civil liberties of United States were violated date back to the First and the Second World Wars. During the World War I, Wilson passed the Espionage Act according to which any criticism of the US government was punishable by imprisonment. Furthermore, the culture of espionage was established through the creation of the American Protective League (Guiora & Joliet, 2019). Members of this organization had a task of monitoring their neighbors, colleagues and friends and reporting any manifestations of disloyalty.

The Second World War witnessed an unprecedented deportation in the American history. Once the Pearl Harbor was attacked, Roosevelt issued a law which expanded the powers of Secretary of War (Guiora & Joliet, 2019). He was given the right to change the geography of the country, creating special zones on its territory where the forced relocation of civilians was allowed. This law was aimed to relocate the immigrants from the Land of the Rising Sun since they were seen as potentially unreliable. People of Japanese descent were taken to military barracks, and a ban on their movement was imposed.

I believe the right balance between human rights and offsetting the threat of terrorism should be found through consensus rather then naked force. The adoption of such acts as the Patriot Act of 2001 serve to undermine people’s faith in the ability of government to ensure freedoms declared in the Constitution. I believe that the citizens’ rights should not be compromised and the FBI should not be involved in the breach of people’s privacy.
