Discuss the types of information that need to be integrated in order to learn how to spell. Describe how the texts that children produce change as they advance through school. Provide an overview of the Hayes model. Discuss the performance of individuals with dyslexia or specific language impairment on writing tasks compared with normally developing children.

In order to learn to spell, such types of information must be integrated as awareness of phonemes or phonological knowledge, orthographic or visual memory, morphemic and etymological knowledge. Initially, during the precommunicative stage, the child uses symbols but does not understand the relationship between a letter and a phoneme. In the semiphonetic stage, the child partially understands the connection and uses simple letters to represent words and other parts of speech. It is followed by the phonetic stage, when the child uses letters to represent each word’s phoneme. During the transitional stage, the child learns and uses conventional methods for representing sounds. The understanding of the spelling system and logic is seen.

The correct stage is when the child shows a complete understanding of the orthographic system and knows its fundamental rules. Relational frame theory, also known as Hayes’s model, implies that the hierarchy of human language and higher cognition are interrelated and that natural human language is the defining criterion of this relationship. Hayes’s model is conceptually the opposite of associative learning. Individuals with dyslexia write more slowly than normally developing children. It is not because they are slow at handwriting execution but because they pause more often during composing. Therefore, their slow writing is related to their spelling ability.
