Nurses occupy a unique position in the healthcare system and often become aware of the most urgent needs and interests of their patients faster than other health providers. As a nurse, I may use this knowledge as the main source of power in order to influence favorable changes in policies and persuade legislators. This type of power, rooted in one’s competence and skills, is referred to as expert power, which endows a person who possesses the capacity to lead and inspire others by virtue of their superior knowledge. I would also pursue legitimate power associated with higher political and professional statuses. The words and statements of people with legitimate power are usually perceived as more significant and valid.
