Advanced registered nurse practitioners and advanced practice nurses are active participants in quality improvement activities. Every activity provided by a nurse aims to improve the quality of care and, as a result, better patient outcomes. As a rule, ARNPs or APNs are the members of quality improvement teams guided by nurse managers, chief executive officers, or medical directors, depending on the team’s task. However, they can also be the leaders of such teams in case they have enough experience and are aware of the possible impact of changes in the clinical care process and healthcare facility on the whole. Still, nurse practitioners are mainly involved in quality improvement interventions and monitoring of the progress of the quality improvement plan.

Nurse practitioners can contribute both to the improvement of the quality of care and save costs for healthcare organizations. Thus, quality improvement presupposes the reduction of adverse health conditions and a decrease of the period of stay in the hospital, which leads to the shortening of expenses usually connected with long-term care patients.
There is no recent research describing the contributions of the ARNPs or APNs’ involvement in quality improvement teams in Miami. However, the experience of the Missouri Quality Initiative proves the importance of the APRN involvement on the example of nursing homes. The improvements mainly touch the primary care, discussions about care improvement, and enhancement of communication within a healthcare team.

I suppose that the ARNPs or APNs’ participation in quality improvement teams is necessary. Nurse practitioners are always involved in the process of care and spend the most time with patients. Therefore, they know patients’ needs and can assess the results of the implemented changes first-hand, thus contributing to better results of quality improvement teams.
