Social Darwinism was the influential theory during the Age of Imperialism as it justified the motives of the Western powers. As Europe, for instance, was naturally superior to Africa, their control should bring only advantages for humanity. Europe could profit at the expense of enslaved Africans, and Africa, in turn, was under protection.
