The corpus callosum, a long, thick band of nerve fibers that develop and myelinates quickly in early life, connects the two sides of the brain. Because of this, young children get much better at synchronizing the left and right sides of their brains and, therefore, their bodies.

Unlike at age 2, they can hop, skip, and gallop at age 6. When the corpus callosum fails to grow, serious diseases, nearly invariably involving intellectual impairment, follow. One sign of autism spectrum disorder, as well as dozens of other illnesses, is abnormal corpus callosum growth.
