The South lagged behind the North because the Civil War had devastated it. Its economy was mainly agricultural, which was different from the North, which was mainly industrial. Rapid industrial growth led to the rise of such cities as Chicago and New York. Urban political machines, such as Tammany Hall in New York, were used by politicians to mobilise support from urban residents who sought patronage. Bourbon Democrats and Republican Mugwumps opposed political machines because they had a lot of control of the economy.
