Discuss the emergence of children’s concrete-operational reasoning, changes in representation, memory, strategy use, and metacognition. What should parents and professionals know about these changes and how to best support cognitive development?

In middle childhood, children end up developing mental capacities and other brain functions. This is the part of childhood development where mental resources are used most, and the course of the development increases a given child’s ability to the expression of other non-brain functions. Children end up having a spatial relationship and causality understanding. They can make up accurate judgments about what causes things and the effect of the causes. Other emergencies of concrete operational reasoning are categorization and conservation. These were the areas of mental development that children were unable to do when they were in their early childhood years.

In metacognition, children shift from rigid illogical thinking into flexible and logical thinking where they become aware of their thoughts as much as they understand the responses that others make. However, prior familiarity with the materials and features that a child is interacting with will play a role in their concrete operational reasoning. This explains the role of memory and strategy use. Children learn to associate memories with symbols and infer new information from symbols such as numbers, thus learning static use of their mental power.
