The years during which children and adolescents attend school are essential to the formation of their morals and social skills. As Kay notes, moral growth cannot occur without one experiencing moral responsibility in a group. The same is true for pro-social development, as it requires contact with numerous other people by definition. As discussed above, group learning can enhance the academic performance of individual members. Therefore, children who integrate into teams well will likely achieve excellent results while those who lack the capacity or desire to do so may fall behind the rest. As such, ensuring that all children have opportunities to grow and learn is essential to the teaching process.

Forceful insertion of children who are experiencing social or moral issues into groups may not yield the desired results, and so efforts to make integration natural should take place. Kay supports the promotion of values such as moral independence, rationality, altruism, and responsibility. Such an approach would make it more likely that children can function within a group without being ostracized or ignored and will eventually be able to join teams without assistance. Nevertheless, the teacher should evaluate the progress of the students to discover potential issues and concerns to address. Some children may be unable to catch up with the rest without outside assistance, and educators should help them along.
