Smoking is a leading cause of preventable mortality worldwide. It has harmful effects on people’s health. Due to the availability of medical facts and public awareness, social norms regarding smoking have changed. In addition, commercial advertisements have altered the perception of smoking in society. Any behavior that conflicts with the accepted social norms is considered deviant. Since social norms do not tolerate smoking in many Western countries, it is now considered deviant behavior. Therefore, a more significant number of countries have banned it. Very few states in Europe allow smoking in public places, such as restaurants and workplaces, limiting people’s freedom to smoke. Nevertheless, smoking is acceptable in some countries, such as Albania and Italy where smokers are not frowned upon. Therefore, societal norms that exist in different states define whether smoking is considered deviant or not.
