There was no significant culture clash in my life. However, while growing up, I adopted many values and behaviors of my parents and they frequently contrasted with those of my peers. For example, in our house, we had a large library because my mother was fond of reading. The number of books was shocking for many classmates who came to visit me. Just like Jen who taught her peers what Tofu was, I had to explain to my friends why there were so many books in our house. The very necessity to explain something like that created confusion in me and made me alienate myself from my mother’s ideas about reading to fit in the company of my peers.
