Aspects of identity, such as race and gender, can keep certain groups in power. Political parties, leaders, and civic organizations in many European countries understand that offering to determine one’s gender identity freely can be an effective mechanism in the power struggle.

However, in non-democratic states, women may be distracted from participating in politics. Male leaders will appeal to stereotypes about traditional female roles in order to prove why they, and not women, should run the state. The media are also used to convey the idea that politics is a man’s business, something that women themselves will eventually begin to believe as well.

The presence of certain racial prejudices in a society can also lead to oppressors being in power. For centuries, some nations have overrun others, justifying this with absurd ideas about the superiority of one nation over another. The most striking examples are the fascist ideology of Germany and the American Civil War.
