Georgia’s criteria for selecting gifted students indicate the eligibility of students to participate in state-funded special education programs. This program is developed for intellectually talented students that are chosen according to specific criteria. Starting from July 1, 1993, the criteria are modified based on the requirements from time to time. Those are based on the information about the student’s work performance; it includes data from teachers, parents, and classmates.
The criteria show the mental level of the student and abilities for creative and rational thinking. Standardized tests are used to measure this level, and the student’s eligibility for state-funded education programs isdecided based on those measures. Specific documentation is used when applying to those programs; according to specifications in the Code section, the local school system should provide a list of all students eligible for special education programs.
