Policing systems established in various countries evolved in the course of many decades and sometimes even centuries. The differences between them can be attributed to the political culture of various nations, the form of government, or people’s attitude toward the state. For instance, a policing system in the United States can be described as decentralized. This means that separate police departments have a high degree of autonomy while investigating a certain case. This situation can be explained by the fact that American citizens resist the notion of a centralized government. In turn, in the former countries of the Soviet Bloc, policing systems are highly centralized. This structure is the legacy of the political regime established in these countries. These examples suggest that the policing systems may not function in the same way.
