The removal of the Native Americans from east of the Mississippi River violated the principles found in the Declaration of Independence. The first principle assumes that all people are equal, but President Jackson’s speech and the ensuing series of Trail of Tears show that Native Americans were not equal to their white counterparts. This assertion explains why they were forcefully removed from their lands, thus taking away their right to land ownership, which violates the second principle of the Declaration of Independence. The Act also violated the third principle because the natives did not consent to cede their ancestral lands to the whites. According to this principle, governments should act in the interests of the governed, but Jackson’s government acted in its interests.
