Describing the Face of a Person

Describe the face of a person of your choice using objective and subjective language.

Ask a friend, a roommate, or a family member to “sit” while you depict this person’s face in writing. Study this person’s face carefully before you begin. Pay close attention to shape, texture, light and shadow, angles, size, color, etc. Try to name every facet and element with precision, capturing this face in words and phrases as fully, accurately, and precisely as possible. Describe the person’s face concentrating only on the use of objective language. Then describe the person’s face concentrating only on the use of subjective language. Here you may incorporate emotion, opinion, and value judgments into your description.
