The pioneer of miming, Marcel Marceau, shows fundamentals of the art in his performances. However, since the beginning of the twentieth century, mimes have made noticeable progress, incorporating various innovations in the post-Marceau period. For example, actors in “Gamarjobat” combine the art of miming with a standup format, conveying humorous sketches without words. Johann Lipowitz, in “Torn,” takes a step forward, erasing the borders between singing and miming. The actor in the “Mime for the 21st Century” does not wear a white painted mask on his face anymore, showing less exaggerated and more psychologically complex emotions to the public. The most striking difference, however, can be noticed in “Mummenschanz,” where mimes symbolize artificial objects. When attending mime performances, the general audience still expects a full three to five-minute sketch about human life.
