Risk management has had an important impact on the scope of nursing documentation. According to Lavin, Harper, and Barr, one of the examples, wherein the process of identifying and minimizing the adverse consequences of patient’s liability, is the electronic health record (EHR). In this documentation tool, cumbersome electronic processes are used to yield useful data with the goal of improving patients’ safety, assessing the quality of care, and maximizing the efficiency of the staffing needs. Another example where nursing documentation has been influenced by the concept of risk management is the issue of Joint Commission standards for patient safety. In this case, organizations were held accountable not only for measuring performance but also for implementing IOM’s recommendations for better collaboration between quality and risk professionals.
