Skeletal and integumentary systems each have their purpose as well as the conjoint ones. The human skeleton has two primary functions: first, it provides support for the body in its entirety, and, secondly, it acts as the body’s storehouse for minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus. The integumentary system forms the protective barrier defending the body from the outside, and also, due to the sweat glands, plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature. An example of the interdependence of these systems is the synthesis of vitamin D. When exposed to sunlight, specific skin cells launch the synthesis of vitamin D, which, among other things, regulates calcium absorption from ingested food to blood. Hence, if the integumentary system would not provide vitamin D, the body would have to rely on bones as a calcium source, which would make them increasingly weak. This case is just one example of how failure to maintain homeostasis may impact bone health.
