Although the authors claim that molecular mechanisms of KP46 are still scarcely studied, they suggest that the ability of this agent to induce apoptosis may be the reason for its effectiveness against osteosarcoma cells. For instance, one of the possible explanations includes the hypothesized ability of KP46 to accumulate in mitochondria, which causes exhaustion of the labile iron pool and subsequent p53-dependent BNIP3L activation. Such a process, in turn, leads to the death of the cell, which is otherwise called p53-dependent apoptosis.
