The key components of the hydrologic cycle are interception, precipitation, evaporation, depression storage, infiltration, runoff, percolation, moisture, and transpiration. Evaporation occurs on the surface and oceans because of heat from the sun. The moisture rises, which precipitates fall back into the oceans and land in the form of sleet, hail, snow, and rain. Buildings and vegetation intercept some of the rainfall. A fraction of the precipitation that falls on the surface infiltrates into the soil, while the rest flows into streams. The water that permeates the soil percolates further to form groundwater.
