Children are less likely than adults to know much about other cultures and ethnicities, but most grown-ups also are not necessarily aware of every custom they encounter. Both educational systems and workplaces have encountered difficulties with integrating people who come from a different background than those already there. They may object to a focus on a culture that is alien to them or come into conflict with a variety of smaller aspects that were assumed to be universal. Kale and Luke also note that language awareness is a significant concern, particularly for children, who may require a variety of interventions. Teachers should be aware of these concerns and prepare strategies to address them.

While celebrating and incorporating the variety of cultures and ethnicities that exist in the world is a desirable practice, it may not be sufficient. Kale and Luke note that the approach fails to address existing inequities in matters such as resources, language, and literacy. As such, an educator should assess each child individually and attempt to engage him or her with various activities without holding everyone to the same rigid standard. Kale and Luke mention practices such as readings about the traditions of the child’s culture to help him or her put the language into a familiar context. Such approaches would help children who are not familiar with the dominant culture to learn the language and excel academically.
