Photorespiration is a process when a plant’s rubiscoenzyme acts on oxygen rather than CO2, which creates a waste of energy and fixed carbon in the process. C3 plants have no preventative mechanisms, whereas C4 plants separate the Calvin cycle and CO2 fixation spatially in different cell categories. CAM plants reduce photorespiration temporally by focusing on water preservation during the day and other processes during the night.
