Metamorphism is a sudden change in the Earth’s minerals without the process of liquidation taking place. The occurrence of the metamorphism process is catalyzed by heat, pressure, and reactive chemical fluids. Generally, chemical and crystal compositions of rocks tend to change without affecting or changing the rocks’ natural solid form. Metamorphism mainly occurs at diagenesis 200 degrees centigrade and melting at 850 degrees centigrade. There are four main types of metamorphism. The first type is contact metamorphism, which occurs because of the heat generation of a close magma source. The second type is regional metamorphism, which is made up of a great amount of heat and pressure. Thirdly, hydrothermal metamorphism occurs through a chemical process when very hot liquids surround the rock. Finally, fault zone metamorphism is normally a change that occurs on fault lines.

Foliation is the main factor to consider when evaluating metamorphic rocks. Basically, there are different types of foliation, namely, rock cleavage, schistosity, gneiss, and non-foliated. Metamorphic rocks can be classified into two distinct categories depending on whether they are foliated or non-foliated. The difference between the two is that foliated rocks have various layers around them, while non-foliated rocks have only one layer. All or any of the rocks can be transformed into a metamorphic rock. The rocks’ original components determine the agent required for metamorphism to take place. Some examples of such rocks include slate, shale, marble, and limestone. Nevertheless, metamorphism normally occurs in areas consisting of heat, pressure, and chemical fluids such as convergent plate boundaries, subduction zones, and along the mid-ocean ridge.
