This value will vary depending on the intensity of photosynthesis and respiration in addition to biomass accumulation. Besides, the global ecosystem differs prominently in terms of production. Some of the world’s common ecosystems include estuaries, extreme deserts, oceans, savannas, and agricultural land, among others.

Litterfall is a very important part of the ecosystem owing to the fact that it assists in the global prediction of the net primary productivity in addition to regional patterns of nutrient cycles and fertility of the soil. The rate of these processes will e higher with increased temperatures, and at the same time, evapotranspiration will be high. The net primary productivity will tend to increase with high rainfall amounts. All three processes are critical in nutrient cycles bearing in mind that it is only through energy flows that nutrients are synthesized.
