Describe a memorable time when you experienced strong emotions, and then analyze how two different theories would explain that event. First, describe the occasion, the events, and your emotional experience. Then, apply two theories to an analysis of your experience: The James-Lange theory and the two-factor theory. Your analyses should show specifically how each theory explains your experience and what is distinctive according to each theory.

The event that I would like to describe is a day in my childhood when my parents and I first went to the amusement park. Although I was about 5 or 6 years old, I remember being extremely excited when I first saw that fascinating place. It was breathtaking for me to see so many different rides and games, with music and happy people and lights flashing all over the place.

The James-Lange theory suggests that emotions occur as a result of physical reactions to an event or an occasion. Therefore, my excitement can be explained as a result of different physical reactions, such as an increased heart rate. In addition, seeing that view and experiencing the atmosphere with such a variety of different sounds, smells, and people caused a release of dopamine, which made me anticipate something enjoyable.

My parents also looked happy, holding my hands tightly, and this bodily sensation added to my feeling of excitement. Thus, this theory distinctively suggests that emotions occur as a result of physical reactions to different factors.

While the two-factor theory of emotions also suggests that emotional reactions result from some kind of physiological arousal, it still differs from the James-Lange theory. Schachter and Singer, who developed the two-factor theory, believed that physical arousal alone could not be responsible for causing certain emotions, as the same physical reaction can be connected to a wide variety of emotions.

This theory suggests that emotions caused depend on how people label the physical reaction they are experiencing. It can be stated, therefore, that my emotion of excitement was the result of my labeling the physical reactions I had experienced as “happiness” or “joy .” This interpretation does seem probable because I remember seeing many people around me smiling and laughing, which could have indicated to me that the park was a place directly connected to entertainment and fun.
