Processing speed is a term used to refer to the pace at which an individual can perceive auditory or visual information, make sense of it, and effectively respond. In other words, processing speed refers to the time taken to have something accomplished. Speed of processing interacts with other cognitive functioning areas by negatively influencing the ability to generate a response, retrieve information from long-term recall, and consider what is supposed to be done.
Slow processing speed in dyslexic students has an impact on the learner both at home and at school. In the classroom, the learner struggles to finish homework at the expected time and has difficulty taking notes or listening when the teacher speaks. The same challenge associated with working memory makes it a struggle for the dyslexic learner to read and make notes at the same time.
