A police officer cannot stop a vehicle without a valid reason or pretext. Therefore, a pretextual traffic stop is a stop used as a justified reason to search the vehicle. According to the corresponding Supreme Court ruling, the officer may stop the vehicle if he or she believes that the driver broke the traffic law. In this case, vehicle detention is considered legal as it does not violate the Fourth Amendment.
