Define and explain the buffering concept and its importance in maintaining homeostasis in organisms. You must demonstrate, among other things, what the primary buffers are and where they are situated. Kidney role in the process of buffering, and explain what happens if the blood is not adequately cushioned.

Buffer is a substance that increases the quantity of alkali or acid essential to yielding a unit change in PH when present in a solution. Buffering is a process that helps maintain internal body temperature in organisms. Buffers’ ability to maintain the PH results from a weak acid and weak base they contain. For instance, Hydrofluoric Acid and Sodium Fluoride are buffered. Hydrofluoric acid is invalid due to the intense attraction between the relatively small fluoride ions and solvated protons, making it not completely dissolve in water.

Obtaining hydrogen fluoride in an aqueous solution equilibrium state is achieved. The concept is brought out in Le Chatelier’s Principle. The importance of buffering in maintaining the homeostasis of organisms is that buffering maintains the body’s PH by releasing the excess hydrogen ions accumulated and making the PH level function at equilibrium. Primary buffers are substances serving as safeguards in the body. Examples include plasma proteins and cells with carbonic acid, hemoglobin, bicarbonate ions, and phosphates.

Primary buffers are located in the system of IF that surrounds cells in tissues across the body. Human kidneys help regulate acid and base balance by releasing hydrogen ions and producing bicarbonate which helps to preserve blood plasma pH within a normal series. If blood is not buffered, there will be an imbalance of blood PH that is highly acidic and highly basic, leading to death.
